Tailshaper optic for welding applications

PowerPhotonic will exhibit at the Industrial Laser Applications Symposium (ILAS) on 26-27 March in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Alex Griffiths, Lead Engineer, will present his paper, “Asymmetric Beam Shapes for Improving Laser Welding Performance,” discussing PowerPhotonic’s new ‘Tailshaper’; a refractive, freeform optic that enhances the laser welding process. When applied to the welding of Electric Vehicle (EV) battery packs, it improves the structural integrity and safety of the lithium-ion batteries.

Dr. Steve Kidd, Head of Sales and Marketing at PowerPhotonic, stated, “ILAS provides an excellent platform for PowerPhotonic to demonstrate how its freeform, wafer-scale optics can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of industrial laser processing applications. As well as displaying a range of current and new beam shaping optics, the new Tailshaper generates an output beam with a tail-shaped profile, preheating and cooling metal on either side of the weld spot. This technology is optimised for safe laser welding and superior weld quality of AA 6082; the most widely used aluminium alloy in the automotive industry. It can be implemented through a straightforward adaptation of existing, industrial welding machines.

“Independent testing by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), the industrial innovation centre of the Innovate UK Catapult Network, shows improved weld quality of autogenous welding at speeds of 25mm per second with 4kW of laser power. Productivity rises by 20%, tensile strength improves by up to 40%, while energy consumption and carbon emissions reduce. The weld forms a hermetic seal and faults such as porosity and spatter are largely eliminated, with significantly less post-weld finishing required.”
