Management Team

Dr Roy McBride, Managing Director

As MD, Roy is responsible for company strategy and growth, with a strong focus on sales and technical development.  Roy co-founded PowerPhotonic in 2004, and drove the formation and funding of the company. Prior to PowerPhotonic, Roy was Hybrids Development Manager at Alcatel UK, where he managed a team developing advanced active modules for optical communications. 

Other prior roles included Electronics Development Manager at Kymata, lecturer and researcher at Heriot-Watt University, and Laser Development at Ferranti.  Roy is the author of numerous publications and co-inventor on 7 granted patents.

Julian Hayes, Sales and Marketing Director

Julian joined the company in 2013 to spearhead an expansion in the sales and marketing activity.  He has been in high technology sales and marketing since 1985.  Prior to PowerPhotonic, Julian was V.P. of Marketing at Elonics Ltd., a venture capital backed RF silicon chip company and before that, V.P. of Marketing for Wolfson Microelectronics plc., where he was part of the original team responsible for the audio product business.

Richard Clarke, Finance Director

Richard is a Chartered Accountant and MBA with over 25 years’ experience as finance director in manufacturing and technology businesses in the UK, USA and Asia. He spent 6 years as Finance Director of Avimo Group, a Singapore-based optoelectronics manufacturing group and 5 years as CFO of a nanotechnology spinout from Oxford University, which floated on AIM in 2005. Prior to joining PowerPhotonic, Richard was Finance Director of Xennia Technology Limited, a developer of industrial inkjet systems, which was sold to Sensient Corporation in 2015.

Jim Cardle, Operations Manager

Jim is responsible for the company’s precision micro-optics production operations.  Jim has spent his entire career in high quality Manufacturing Operations.  Prior to joining PowerPhotonic, Jim worked for Raytheon Systems Ltd, Glenrothes, UK on international projects to establish and maintain manufacturing capability in the UK.  His prior roles at Raytheon included Production Engineering, Manufacturing Management, and Program Management, and he certified as a black belt in Raytheon Six Sigma, the company’s Business Process Improvement methodology.

Paul Blair, Engineering Manager

Paul is responsible for design and development of PowerPhotonic’s laser machining systems and support equipment.  Paul is a veteran of the telecommunications and optical components industry.  Paul has been involved with a number of successful high technology startups including telecom start up Kymata Ltd, leading a new venture into hybrid integration of active and passive modules for optical communications, which became part of Alcatel. Prior to joining Powerphotonic, Paul was Director of Technology at Exxelis Ltd., which developed and manufactured UV-embossed films for the LCD TV industry.
